Description
Large, upright evergreen tree, conifer (H 15-30 m, W 7-10 m). Bark grey, flaky, on the trunk and older branches black-grey, distinctly roughly fissured, ornamental. Crown at first broadly conical, later ovoid to rounded, eventually irregular, picturesque. Branches wide open to horizontal, later characteristically hanging. Young shoots yellow-brown. Buds elongate, grey-white. Needles (7-12 cm), pointed, in pairs, stiff, thick, dark grey-green. Flowers separately arranged in male and female inflorescence on the same plant. Flowering period: May. Fruits cones (4-7 cm), elongate, brown. Easily withstands wind, cold and heat. Grows also on the coastline. A very good container-plant, suitable for a bonsai.
