Description
Large, upright evergreen tree, conifer (H 15-25 m, W 6-7 m). Bark dark grey to brown-grey, roughly flaky. Crown broadly ovoid to rounded. Branches widely spreading to hanging. Young shoots thin, light brown, glabrous. Buds elongate egg-shaped, red-brown, not resinous. Needles (7-15 cm) pointed, in pairs, straight, thin, light green to mid green. Flowers separately arranged in male and female inflorescence on the same plant. Flowering period: April. Fruits cones (5-10 cm), egg-shaped, glossy, red-brown, scales with distinctly light grey spot in center. Requires dry, sufficiently drained soils. Slightly susceptible to cold and snow, but very tolerant to heat, drought and salt laden wind.
