Description
Small, slow growing deciduous tree or large, bushy shrub (H 4-6 m, W 3-5 m). Bark on young shoots grey-brown to red-brown, smooth; old bark flaky, patched, light brown to orange-brown in olive green. Crown funnel-shaped at first, at maturity very broad, picturesque. Branches upright to open, later partly hanging. Leaves lanceolate to ovate (4-8 cm), mid green, autumn colour bright orange-yellow to bright red. Flowers simple, cup-shaped (5-6 cm), snow white with bright orange-yellow anthers. Flowering period: June-August. Fruits brown, dry. It grows well in sufficiently drained, but always moderately moist, light, humus-rich, acidic soils. Needs a moderately sunny site, higher air-moisture and protection from hot sun and wind.
