Description
Large, upright deciduous tree (H 12-18 m, W 7-9 m). Crown pyramidal, dense. Bark dark grey, smooth. Young shoots grey, slightly hairy, not sticky. Leaves broadly ovate (5-10 cm), with pointed tip, with a roughly toothed margin, slightly ribbed, glossy, dark green, underneath grey hairy. Flowers not remarkable; male flowers in hanging yellow-brown catkins (5 cm), female flowers ovate (up to 0,5 cm), brown-red. Flowering period: March. Fruits ovate (1,5 cm), cone-like, woody, black-brown. Undemanding tree, it grows well in different soil-types, best in lime; normally withstands urban conditions, polution, drought and wind.
