Description
Medium-sized, bushy, densely growing, semi-evergreen to deciduous shrub (H 1,5-2 m, W 1,5-1,8 m). Branches upright to open, arching, dense, thorny. Leaves elongate ovate (2-2,5 cm), leathery, with a spiny margin, smooth, glossy, at first dark violet to red-violet, later dark green, autumn colour bright orange-red to red. Flowers in numerous dense inflorescence, light yellow, strongly scented. Flowering period: May. Fruits rare. Attracts butterflies and bees. Undemanding shrub, it grows well in different soil-types, also in poor, dry, sandy soils; in distinctly sunny to slightly shady sites. Berberis × media is a cross between B. thunbergii and B. × hybrido-gagnepainii.
