Description
Large, upright evergreen tree, conifer (H 20-25 m, W 5-8 m). Bark at first grey-green, smooth, later grey-brown, flaky, roughly fissured. Crown regular, narrowly pyramidal, dense, more broad at maturity, irregular, picturesque. Branches open to horizontal. Young shoots olive green, dense red-brown hairy, later dark grey. Buds egg-shaped, narrowly pointed, mostly resinous. Needles (5-10 cm) stiff, pointed, prominent, in fives, dark green, inside with white edge. Flowers separately arranged in male and female inflorescence on the same plant. Flowering period: April. Fruits cones (5-8 cm), broadly egg-shaped, brown, scales stiff, thick, bent backward. Seeds edible, with a hard coat. Requires dry, sufficiently drained soils, withstands cold and wind.
