Description
Large, broad, deciduous tree (H 10-18 m, W 8-12 m). Crown ovate to broadly spherical, open. Bark grey, young shoots light grey-brown, downy. Leaves with long petioles, heart-shaped to broadly ovate (20-40 cm), shallowly lobed, softly hairy, green. Flowers tube-shaped (4-6 cm), in upright racemes (20-30 cm), light blue-violet. Flowering period: April-May. Fruits elongate egg-shaped, dry, light brown nuts, persist on branches long into winter. Easily withstands urban conditions, heat and summer drought. Paulownia catalpifolia is a hybrid between Paulownia tomentosa and P. elongata, withstands lower winter temperatures and grows slightly slower.
