Description
Large, upright, slow growing deciduous tree, conifer (H 15-25 m, W 4-5 m). Crown narrowly pyramidal, at maturity more broad, ovate, open. Branches at first upright to slightly open, later wide open to horizontal. Bark thin, red-brown, later lightly fissured. Needles arranged alternatly and appressed to the twig, soft, flat (1-2 cm), bright light green, autumn colour orange-red to coppery-red. Flowers in egg-shaped inflorescence, unremarkable. Flowering period: March-April. Fruits cones, broadly egg-shaped to ovate (2-3 cm), green-brown to dark brown. Grows best in deep, always moist to wet soils, in sunny, light, open sites. Withstands urban conditions and occasional drought, withstands long periods of overflooding and higher ground-water level.
